The Me-Time Mixtape: Three essential hand-curated links and resources on creative self-care. Carve out some me time this week!

I'm mixing things up a bit in Season Three of the podcast with some timeless verses, and I'm starting with today's episode on a topic I'm all too familiar with—overthinking. Because of its negative influence on my life, I try to tackle overthinking, worry, and rumination from all angles. I've built a practice around reducing its grip, and today, I'm sharing some of my best strategies with you.

In today's episode, we'll use a Khalil Gibran quote as a jumping-off point for discussing the topic of overthinking. Then, I'll outline some strategies from my new guide, the Art-lovers Creative Practice Guide to Stop Overthinking, Worry, and Rumination. It's free to all subscribers, just sign in.

#1 FREE Art-Lovers Guide to Stop Overthinking

Here's my creative twist on eight tools, across four modalities, for stopping overthinking, rumination, and worry. I use these tools to help reduce negative thoughts, and while they can hit us like a ton of bricks at the most inopportune times, I know these strategies work to lessen the pain of overthinking.

Try one or more of them, and let me know how they work for you. The guide is available here.

#2 Khalil Gibran Has Me Thinking About Overthinking 🤔

One of my favorite quotes by the Lebanese-American writer, poet, and visual artist Khalil Gibran goes like this: “We choose our joys and sorrows long before we experience them.” A simple concept, just one sentence, expresses both a human truth and hints at a philosophy of seeing the vast array of choices we truly have before us.

Let's turn this quote into a journal prompt:

In what ways have you chosen to experience joys and sorrows before they were life experiences?

#3 The Case for Resolutions

Do you grapple with the tension of wanting to create New Year's resolutions while also wanting to accept who and where you are in your present situation? Some years I've made resolutions and others I haven't. If this is a year when you want to write some meaningful (and self-affirming) resolutions, check out this article where you write realistic goals, and then tuck them away until the end of the year (when you review them again). You write them down, put them away, and then move on with your life! It's a refreshing, no-pressure perspective.
